Ask Evan is a new monthly feature on Deloitte.com. If you’re interested in learning more about making your company’s skills and knowledge work harder for communities in need, ask Evan Hochberg, Deloitte's national director of community involvement, about what's on your mind.
Dear Evan,
Skills-based volunteering makes a lot of sense for your organization, but my company is in manufacturing and I’m not sure how most of our people could contribute. What would you suggest?

Dear Susan,
That's a great question. It's important that all companies understand the importance of skills-based volunteerism and that it is relevant regardless of what type of business you operate. The key is thinking about all the business expertise the company has that makes it run as a world-class organization. By that, I mean there are likely employees with expertise in strategy, management, marketing, finance, human resources, public relations and any other number of areas, without which your company would not be successful. These skills are desperately needed by nonprofits — even strong nonprofits — and volunteerism anchored in these skills can be much more rewarding for the volunteer and the nonprofit organization. Visit our tip sheet for more ideas on how to set up a skills-based volunteer program at your company. Good luck!
Evan
