Deloitte Participates in ServiceNation Summit

Publish date:

In September 2008, Deloitte joined more than 500 leaders from government, business and entertainment to celebrate the power and potential of service and volunteering at the  ServiceNation Summit in New York City.

Many corporate and government leaders participated, including presidential candidates Barack Obama and John McCain, First Lady Laura Bush, Senators Hillary Clinton (New York) and Chris Dodd (Connecticut), Martin Luther King III, Her Majesty Queen Noor of Jordan, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu CEO Jim Quigley, who was a panelist at the Summit.

Additionally, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger addressed the gathering in a  video message, during which he reinforced Deloitte's leadership in volunteerism. Schwarzenegger noted that when he created a state cabinet position for service and volunteerism in California, "companies like Deloitte" and others contacted his office to ask how they might help. Schwarzenegger also called for the next U.S. president to create a federal secretary of service and volunteerism position within the cabinet.

Quigley challenges companies to take leading role in the community

"This is truly a historical moment in our nation’s history. America is mobilizing citizens, corporations, faith-based groups and nonprofits to be agents of change in their communities. Deloitte and I are honored to be at the forefront of this great movement of change," said James Quigley, CEO, Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu, during his participation in the "Partners in Service: Role of the Private Sector" panel.

The panel explored the private sector's role in expanding volunteer and service opportunities, including using corporate resources and professionals' skills to support the growth and impact of the nonprofit sector at home and abroad.

Quigley focused his remarks on Deloitte's  Pro Bono ProgramIMPACT Day and the overall depth by which Deloitte integrates community involvement into its business and how it contributes to Deloitte's overall sense of corporate responsibility. He challenged corporate America to take its collective efforts to the next level and to see the powerful value not only to the community, but to their talent strategy and corporate brand.

"ServiceNation is the most significant gathering of leaders ever to advance the idea that volunteerism isn’t a 'nice-to-do.' It’s a 'must-do' if we want to address our country's most pressing social problems," said  Evan Hochberg, national director,  Community Involvement, Deloitte Services LP. "It also reaffirms corporate America’s role in leading the charge for addressing key issues, such as education and the environment. I am very proud Deloitte is recognized as a leader in this space and that the country seeks our voice in this important movement."
