Deloitte’s Latest Pro Bono Case Studies

California Seismic Safety Commission

Challenge

The California Seismic Safety Commission focuses on earthquake-related issues, and recommends to the Governor and Legislature policies and programs needed to reduce earthquake risks.  Japan’s 2011 earthquake raised awareness of the economic challenges that often surface following a disaster. The Commission sought Deloitte’s help to develop a set of recommendations that will help California businesses and government plan mitigation strategies to minimize severe economic impacts in the wake of a future disaster.

Contributions

Deloitte ‘s interviews with the governor’s office of emergency services and businesses of all sizes throughout California, the team’s evaluation of lessons learned from recovery response efforts to past disasters worldwide, and the subject matter specialization of Deloitte’s ERS disaster response professionals informed a comprehensive deliverable comprised of leading practices and potential steps to help ensure rapid post-disaster economic recovery.

Impact

Deloitte’s work was designed to help the state in its planning efforts to address business needs immediately following a future disaster, a critical component to ensure long-term economic recovery. The state commission recognized the value of Deloitte’s work by issuing a resolution recognizing Deloitte for helping to protect California’s economy in the wake of future disasters, and has forwarded the recommendations to the Japanese Consulate for their consideration as they continue their recovery efforts.

Military Child Education Coalition (MCEC)

Challenge

The Military Child Education Coalition (MCEC) is a national nonprofit aimed at ensuring inclusive, quality educational experiences for all military-connected children. These children face challenges related to mobility, family separation, and transition. In addition, the complex landscape of inconsistent state and local education standards complicates transitions from one school to another. MCEC sought to develop an actionable strategic plan that would advance their ability to help military-connected children successfully pursue their college and career goals.

Contributions

Deloitte along with MCEC hosted an event in Washington D.C., convening a wide variety of committed, visionary senior stakeholders along with military families and the students themselves to analyze key challenges, brainstorm solutions, and increase buy-in to address the issue of college and workforce readiness for military-connected children.  The event resulted in an action plan which charts a clear course for both immediate and long-term implementable solutions.

Impact

The two way dialogue coupled with actionable plan elevated the issue among key stakeholders and positioned the organization on a path forward to focus on their core challenge, enhancing college and workforce readiness for military-connected children.
