The Center's shaping strategies research — highlighted in an October 2008 Harvard Business Review article, "Shaping Strategy in a World of Constant Disruption" — has attracted the attention of top-tier reporters. BusinessWeek reporter Steve Hamm discussed shaping strategies’ relevance during times of economic upheaval in his Globespotting blog. Hamm wrote, “Part of shaping is convincing people of a new way of thinking or seeing things.” Read the full blog posting, entitled  “John Hagel Getting Aggressive in a Downturn.”

“Innovation in Hard Times,” an op-ed piece by  John Hagel, director,  Deloitte Consulting LLP, and co-chairman, Deloitte LLP Center for Edge Innovation, and John Seely Brown, independent co-chairman, Center for Edge Innovation, appeared on BusinessWeek.com in November 2008. In the article, the authors argue that cutting staff or programs while demanding more of workers will yield diminishing returns; instead, executives should seek leverage to create economic value. 

John Hagel recently  blogged about elements of the Pareto 80/20 rule, which states that for many events, 80 percent of the effects come from 20 percent of the causes. Hagel applied the rule to strategic cost reduction and, in his most recent posting, leverage. “The Pareto 80/20 rule can be used to drive significant cost restructuring,” Hagel writes, “but it can also generate powerful leverage, enabling companies to deliver far more value to the market with far fewer resources. In a time of increasing economic pressure, more companies are likely to discover the power of Pareto.”
