Deloitte sponsors Adam Smith International Forum – Agribusiness in Ukraine

Adam Smith Institute brings together representatives of the agricultural sector

As it has become a good tradition, Deloitte Ukraine sponsored the Adam Smith Institute Forum – Agribusiness in Ukraine, held 23–25 April 2014. Each year the event brings together the leaders of the largest agricultural companies, representatives of public authorities, associations and other agricultural market players to discuss the most topical industry issues and to outline directions for the development of agribusiness in Ukraine. This year, among the companies participating in the Forum were the following market players: UkrLandFarming, Creative Group, Rostok Holding, Swarog, Harveast, EBRD, Danone Ukraine, Bunge Ukraine and others.

The following topical issues were addressed during the conference:

  • Ukraine on the global food market;
  • Strategies for the integration of newly acquired assets by major agrarian holdings;
  • Innovations and responsible production. Resource- and energy saving;
  • Financial strategy and access to capital;
  • Hedging of risks.

Particular attention was drawn to the discussion of the integration strategies of Ukrainian agrarian holdings, with Mykhaylo Melnyk, a Partner at Deloitte Ukraine, acting as the discussion moderator.

Jurgen Hoppenbrouwers, Consulting Director at Deloitte Netherlands, Head of EMEA Advanced Logistics Technologies, shared his experience in improving operational efficiency of large European agricultural company. “The company’s supply chain operation cost has been increasing year-on-year and accounted for the major part of target costs. Despite high output volumes, the company’s further growth and expansion outside Europe were constrained by reduced operational efficiency.    Optimisation of the supply chain operations is a key improvement area to support future growth of such companies. In our case, operating costs were reduced down by 20%,” said Jurgen Hoppenbrouwers. During the presentation, he provided detailed explanation of the supply chain assessment system developed by Deloitte, and shared information about the tools allowing to reach a 20% cost reduction for agricultural enterprises.
