“During the first three quarters of 2008, Central European economies have shown the continuous growth, and the general economic climate was relatively favourable when comparing to turmoils in USA and Western Europe. In that period, the average revenue from sales among two thirds of Top 500 CE companies has grown by 20 percent, when comparing to the situation in 2007. However, the influence of the global economy crisis has become visible in CE region in the last quarter of 2008, and developed further in the first quarter of 2009. In this period, up to 76 percent of companies on the list recorded average decline in revenues from sale by 23 percent, in comparison to the first quarter of 2008,” commented Janez Škrubej, Director in FAS, Deloitte.

The largest revenue decline in the first quarter of 2009, in average by 33 percent, was recorded among the manufacturing companies. Following is the real estate sector, with 22 percent decline, and energy and resources sector with 17 percent decline. Automotive industry, which has recorded revenue increase by 4 percent at the beginning of 2008, in the first quarter of 2009 faced the revenue decline by 33 percent. On this year’s CE Top 500 list, the total number of Polish and Rumanian companies has increased, while the number of Ukrainian companies has decreased significantly, reflecting the general unfavourable economic conditions in this country.

Besides the general CE Top 500 list, Deloitte has created Top 50 banks and Top 50 insurance companies lists in the Central European region.
