Ride the wave - Asian mid-market M&A Spotlight

MAAsia, with its strong economic fundamentals and resilient markets, is well poised to be the growth area for the new decade. As a region and for the first time since 2008, outbound deals to the rest of the world almost equal inbound deals from the rest of the world into the region. In addition, 51% of deals that are outbound from other countries within the region are to countries within Asia.

Deloitte Corporate Finance Advisory leaders shared their views on the nature of mid market M&A and insights into key sector trends, deals, cross border and private equity activity during the launch of the third edition of its Asian mid-market M&A Spotlight report at the Marina Mandarin in Singapore. Produced in collaboration with mergermarket, the annual report entitled Ride the Wave, considers the broader picture and flows of mid-market M&A in the region from 1 July 2009 to 30 June 2010.

The welcome address was delivered by Deloitte Asia Pacific and Southeast Asia CEO Chaly Mah and the half day update was led by Peter Baldock, Global COO and Head of Asia Pacific for Corporate Finance Advisory, who gave an overview of mid-market M&A in Asia Pacific. Jeff Pirie, Head of Corporate Finance Advisory for Singapore, reviewed last year’s scorecard and highlighted trends and developments in Southeast Asia and laid out expectations for the next 12 months.

Iwanho, Head of Corporate Finance Advisory for Deloitte Indonesia, set the scene in Indonesia, perhaps the hottest inbound M&A market in Southeast Asia, while Ng Jiak See, Head of Consumer Business for Corporate Finance Advisory in Singapore & Southeast Asia, focused on the drivers of today’s mid-market M&A consumer space. Claude Illy, Head of Oil & Gas for Corporate Finance Advisory in Asia Pacific, discussed major M&A trends and developments in the Asia Pacific Oil & Gas sector and the rising importance of unconventional gas and its potential impact on the large regional LNG market.

Rounding up the half day update was Heath Snyder, Head of Private Equity for Corporate Finance Advisory in Singapore & Southeast Asia, who posed the question “Is Private Equity surfing the growth of Southeast Asia?” and moderated a panel of senior executives from regional funds who discussed these challenges and what sectors are attractive and why.
