Deloitte pledges support for green

Singapore, Friday 30 October, 2009 – In conjunction with the launch of Clean and Green Singapore 2010, Deloitte Singapore has pledged its support for the green environment by participating in the Carbon Footprint Recalled activity that is taking place at CAN! Green, a Singapore 2010 event, at the HortPark on 31 October 2009.

Partners and staff of Deloitte are volunteering their time to celebrate Singapore 2010, and support the environment, to facilitate the Carbon Footprint Recalled activity at CAN! Green. Visitors to CAN! Green will be invited to make an imprint of their footprint to symbolise their pledge to reduce their carbon footprints. The footprint collected will be curated by arts professional into a three dimensional art installation, which will be displayed next year.

"Greening has a significant impact on carbon footprint, and is part of a larger effort for corporate responsibility and sustainability. It is not just about philanthropy – it is about managing risk, generating value and ensuring the long-term sustainability of an enterprise,” said Chaly Mah, CEO of Deloitte Asia Pacific. “By going green and focusing on environmental challenges, businesses will find new opportunities for cost savings and improving long term operational performance.”

Globally, Deloitte Touche Tomatsu has launched “Greening the Dot”, a sustainability initiative to connect with its member firms employees’ interest in greening. The result was an overwhelming success that engaged half of the workforce, resulting in the implementation of over a thousand greening projects across nearly 100 offices in just the first six months. This has led to reduced energy, water, and paper use, reduced travel, and increased recycling.

"As a professional services firm, Deloitte recognises that one of the most responsible steps we can take for our businesses, community and the environment is to reduce our carbon footprint in our workplace," said Chaly. "Through our strategic actions, we believe that we can more effectively help clients lower their operational and financial risk, improve their workforce productivity, and enhance their public image.”

This year, Deloitte has extended its green initiatives to the community through its corporate responsibility programme. On the annual day of community service, Impact Day, the firm partnered with Northeast Community Development Council (CDC) to bring more than 100 underprivileged primary school children on an educational trip to the Marina Barrage. The firm has plans to be more active in the development and education of youth by leveraging its sponsorship for the inaugural Youth Olympic Games.

As the official consultancy services provider for Singapore 2010, Deloitte is partnering the Singapore Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee to deliver a full spectrum of professional advisory services including programme management, Games impact assessment, enterprise risk management, internal audit, as well as tax, accounting and financial advisory.
