For decades, the business community has mainly viewed the environment protection as a cost to be avoided or marginalized. Today, a perceptual shift is underway and the concept of “going green” has worked its way into the foreground of public consciousness and politics. According to the new Deloitte’s survey “Green IT. The Fast-track to Enterprise Sustainability”, “going green” today can help companies to enhance profitability, low operational and financial risk, improve work force productivity and enhance public image.
Different companies, of course, have different IT requirements. However, IT typically represents 30 percent to 40 percent of a company’s energy consumption. A recent study found that energy consumed by servers and related infrastructure equipment around the world doubled between 2000 and 2005. Because IT consumes a disproportionate amount of electricity, it also accounts for a global warming. Companies that move quickly have an opportunity to realize the benefits of “going green” before market conditions and regulations increase the costs associated with environmentally sustainable practices. The “greening of IT” can provide the prospect of gaining virtually immediate return of investment through reduced energy costs, as well as enhancing the company’s reputation in the marketplace.
