Search and Seizure – Inland Revenue’s scary powers

The recent High Court case Tauber v The Commissioner of Inland Revenue (2011) demonstrated just how far Inland Revenue can extend its powers when it comes to searching a taxpayer’s premises. In this case a team of Inland Revenue officers and accompanying persons, including a computer forensic expert, carried out search and seizure operations at a number of sites including several private dwellings, business premises and even a boat shed.

September Snap Poll Results

In our snap poll last month we asked whether you thought New Zealand should move to having only specific anti-avoidance sections rather than a general anti-avoidance provision. The voting was very close this month with 44% polling “YES” 42% polling “NO” while the remaining 14% were not sure.
