The pressures faced by tertiary education providers with respect to IT are quite unique. IT services are used by a wide variety of people ranging from students through to teaching staff. Change is ever present and the demand of the user community is constantly changing.

While many organisations have only recently been dealing with the BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) trend students have been connecting to the Unitec environment with their own devices for years.

Keeping pace with changes in the learning environment and teaching methods has also seen an explosion of digital content delivered across many platforms and in many settings. All things considered managing these challenges makes for a tough job for the IT team.

Client Issue

Unitec’s issue was actually quite simple. It was all about answering one question: “As an IT function are we fit enough to handle all the challenges we have to face?” Getting to the bottom of this question required quickly getting to grips with the environment and undertaking a rapid diagnostic.

Unitec saw in Deloitte a partner that had the right experience and approach to answer the key questions. The ability to quickly navigate between strategic, technical and management issues was seen as critical. Deloitte brought a small but experienced team. This team was supported by tools and frameworks which quickly pin pointed the areas of focus.

While the end outcome was a report it needed to be a report that resonated with management and one that had clear action steps.

Success factors

Success relied heavily on Deloitte’s ability to get up to speed quickly and to build trusted relationships with the business and with IT. Having established this Deloitte was able to very quickly assess the situation and provide pragmatic and clear recommendations.

What was important was that the approach taken was right-sized to the organisation and the task at hand. Deloitte had no issue in making sure its own approach was fit for purpose.
