Brett Tomkins

Audit Partner - Dunedin

Brett Tomkins

An auditor with a wider view

Having been in the profession for over 20 years, Brett has built up a unique set of skills across a broad range of service offerings. As a result of being exposed to a variety of clients with differing needs, he is used to asking the right questions at the right time. In the UK, Brett had a particular focus on the energy and financial service sectors. Due to the nature of his clients, particularly in the energy sector, Brett has extensive experience of financial and regulatory audit, due diligence, risk management and advisory services. He started his career with a small practice in Birmingham and has always had a number of small and medium sized enterprises in his portfolio.

“Clients have different needs and issues. I think what they really value is having someone to talk to who can understand their point of view, and be able to provide assistance to face them. My experience is such that I have seen an enormous variety of situations, and it has been fun as well as challenging and rewarding to navigate a route to get to the desired outcome.” A number of his clients in the UK and New Zealand are well known; National Grid plc, Centrica plc, Air New Zealand, Rank Group and Avis Budget. However, Brett also has numerous smaller clients who he is just as passionate about. “Over the past 17 years, I’ve approached each engagement as an opportunity to learn everything there is to know not only about auditing but also a client’s business. I genuinely believe you can’t be truly effective unless you know as much as you can about their environment and their people. I guess it’s a very modern approach to auditing.”

Brett is also the Chair of the Sustainable Business Council, a membership organisation of leading New Zealand businesses seeking optimal business, environmental and social success. “Continually challenging yourself to learn, improve and expand your networks mean that you really can be in the best place to service your client. Being the Chair of the SBC certainly adds to that ability, and provides excellent opportunities to hear about new things and build new relationships across New Zealand business.”
