Organisations must continually change and adapt to internal and external developments. Restructuring or transforming the organisation is often the only option to stay fit for the future in a rapidly changing environment.
Challenges for organisational change
Change within organisations can be difficult and can often veer from the planned course. The following challenges are the ones that we frequently encounter in practice:
- The change is primarily focused on the implementation of a technical solution (for example: systems, processes and structure).
- Staff shows resistance to change and continues to behave as they always did.
- Management fails to take the time to pursue the change; or doesn’t hold selves or others accountable for driving the change.
- The project focuses solely on achieving short-term results, ignoring the need to ensure that the change is fully embedded within the organisation.

Successful change is not only about analysing the problem and explaining the benefits of the new system, organisational design or process. Successful change is achieved by enabling people to experience the true nature of the problem. Management and staff must be able to see, understand and actually feel the impact of the change and what the benefits are. Only when they can feel the real added value, will they be prepared to adapt their behaviour.
