The theme of water en ruimte (water and space) is of topical interest and has been so for centuries. In the past, the Netherlands made an effort to reduce water areas to provide more space to its inhabitants, but the tide has turned. The past years have seen a policy shift to align water management to spatial planning and town and country planning. The water area infrastructure is now part of spatial planning and town and country planning. We have realized that water needs space to ensure public safety and prevent flooding. We pay attention to water conservation and the creation of nature reserves.
