2008 survey on the IT business balance

Today’s CEO must cooperate with CIO to more consciously manage results and risks which can be influenced by IT.

Today, CEOs are still insufficiently aware of the added value of strategic cooperation with the IT department in optimally gearing the IT strategy to the business strategy and managing business risks, such as safety, fraud and privacy. This is one of the remarkable findings of Deloitte’s yearly IT Business Balance Survey.

Globally, the survey assessed a number of important trends and evolutions in the relation between IT and business, resulting in some interesting findings:

  • 25% of respondents said that the main focus of strategic discussions between top management and IT is purely financial;
  • less than 25% believe that IT projects will significantly contribute to business growth in the next three years (i.e. projects related to product  innovation, take-overs, mergers and a thorough go-to-market strategy);
  • 40% of business respondents are rather pessimistic about the success ratio of IT projects and state that one in three projects is not finished  within the deadlines or budget;
  • 71% of respondents believe that their senior management is more or less comfortable with outsourcing certain activities. This figure is higher  than in 2007. However, 38% of companies limit themselves to body shopping and insourcing;
  • 30% of respondents state they were never involved in IT-related incidents. One can wonder whether this reflects the reality and whether it is  not rather linked to a lack of transparency around incidents.

About the survey

The IT Business Balance Survey was developed by a multidisciplinary team of specialists within Deloitte: Enterprise Risk Services, Consulting and Tax. The questions asked were related to IT management, evolutions and trends in IT management, IT outsourcing and safety, privacy and fraud challenges.

More than 400 respondents from the IT sector on the one hand and business on the other, across virtually all sectors, took part in the survey. The statistical data gathered from their answers forms the standard criteria for the individual organisations. Moreover, it gives an overview of the current relation between business and IT in the participating countries.
