Back from the brinkCompetitive government in the 21st century |
The financial crisis that brought international banks, corporations, and some governments to, or over, the brink of failure has abated. In its wake is a recession that has shaken the world’s largest and smallest economies. Even as growth, employment, and investment contract during a recession, competition expands. The world becomes vastly more competitive for companies, workers, and governments.
In the midst of disruption, positioning for growth is vital for both industries and governments. These forces of disruption can be explained through the three waves of “The Big Shift,” a methodology from Deloitte’s Center for the Edge. The waves - foundation, flow, and impact - provide a framework that governments can use to assess comparative advantage in technology readiness, regulatory freedom, scientific achievements, retaining and attracting talent, and capital and building programs and policies.
Deloitte has recently released Back from the brink - Now the great transformation. In this point of view Deloitte examines how governments can apply this "Big Shift," to position their economies for growth in the new world order. The report suggests that governments need to look at a new set of metrics to best evaluate competitiveness and determine which assets, policies, programs, and practices have the greatest potential to generate long term growth.
