Best Year since 2008

The BOV MHRA Survey by Deloitte Q4 2012 and YTD

The results of the BOV MHRA survey by Deloitte for Q4 2012 and YTD were presented. “After a negative start to the year in Q1, the overall sector performance picked up momentum in subsequent quarters and registered an overall increase of 2.1% in tourist arrivals and a 7.8% increase in guest nights.”  said Deloitte Financial Advisory Leader Raphael Aloisio.

Total Tourist expenditure also increased by an impressive 9.0% to reach Euro1.345 billion. Private accommodation facilities secured the lion’s share (67%) of the increase in guess night generation and reported a 16.2% increase over 2011.

Although NSO reported a 3.8% increase in collective accommodation guest nights, surveyed hotels reported occupancy levels which were not significantly different from those registered in 2011.

All three hotel categories registered improved average achieved room rates which enabled them to finally surpass the levels registered in 2008, before the global economic crisis.

Notwithstanding the continued increase in overheads, the rate driven improvements had a significant direct impact on gross operating profit per available room, which matched the pre-crisis levels registered in 2008.

“Although on average, hoteliers are generally expecting occupancy levels to remain fairly stable they remain fairly upbeat regarding rate improvement prospects” said Mr Aloisio.
