The Government of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg announced in 2008 the implementation of a strategic partnership initiative with three U.S. research institutions: the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen), the Institute for Systems Biology (ISB) and the Partnership for Personalized Medicine (PPM). As part of the initiative, the Government will invest approximately EUR 140 million over the next five years to develop a centre of expertise in the area of molecular medicine. The initiative consists of three complementary projects:
- The centrepiece of the overall project is the creation of a Luxembourg “BioBank”, in partnership with the TGen, under the name “Integrated BioBank of Luxembourg” (IBBL). The IBBL will initially focus on collecting and analyzing biological samples and related data to support oncology research.
- The second part of the agreement deals with a partnership between the ISB and the University of Luxembourg. The project aims at establishing a centre of excellence in systems biology in Luxembourg – Centre for Systems Biology Luxembourg (CSBL) - within five years.
- The third project is a pilot project, with the PPM and CRP-Santé. It aims to promote and accelerate research in personalized medicine through research projects focused on developing molecular diagnostics for specific diseases. This strategic partnership is a unique opportunity to:
- Develop a centre of expertise that will increase research efforts in Luxembourg
- Favour economic diversification in a cutting-edge and fast-growing sector
- Serve the interests of the general population, as the health care system could greatly benefit from the research findings
