Global Powers of Retailing 2007The search for sustainable growth |
For the past 10 years the member firms of Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu, in conjunction with STORES Magazine, have published the Global Powers of Retailing, a study examining the world’s top retailers.
In addition to covering the top 250 global retailers, this year’s report takes a deeper look at retailers by region, by country, and by format. There are also a global economic outlook for retail and a thought-provoking section that examines eight new challenges facing the industry. The report focus on this these particular challenges because they are significant enough to compel executives to revisit their growth strategies.
Some of the report’s major findings include the following:
- Although most of the top 250 retailers have been involved in the food sector over the last ten years, the share of food-related formats featured in the top 250 is shrinking as speciality stores expand internationally to displace food retailers in the list.
- The transparency brought about by new forms of communication such as YouTube will heighten the importance for retailers of being socially, ethically, and environmentally responsible.
- Massive demographic shifts in the next few years will produce strong developing economies that are more dynamic and risk taking than their developed world counterparts and as such will grow much faster.
