Data recovery

Computer Forensics

Background:
An IT service company approached us. They had been performing a computer upgrade for a high-profile individual, during which they had inadvertently reformatted their client’s hard drive. The drive contained a large number of personal files and other irreplaceable information.

Concern:
Could we recover the lost data.

Deloitte’s Actions:
• Deloitte made a perfect copy of the formatted hard drive (to prevent further data loss).
• We located a copy of the drive’s original 'file table' – the drive’s index of which files were stored on it prior to deletion.
• Using the file table, we quickly recovered all the files on the disk.

Results:
• All missing files were recovered for the client.

Comments:
Hard drives retain surprising amounts of data. If something is deleted, it can usually be recovered, as long as the recovery attempt is made quickly.
Deloitte regularly performs data recovery assignments. Not just deleted hard drives, but lost files, forgotten passwords, and many other similar tasks.
