In recent times, there has been a lot of publicity surrounding the loss of laptops, memory sticks and other forms of storing confidential information. This can result in embarrassment and not least, a loss of confidence in an organisation regarding the storage of confidential information. In a recent case, a civil servant in the UK was successfully prosecuted, fined and demoted, as a consequence of losing a laptop on a train.
The Data Protection Acts 1998 and 2003 place obligations on individuals and organisations both to register as a "Data Controller" and/or a "Data Processor".
