Case study: next generation information architecture for financial services client

Abstract

Next generation information architecture for a financial services client.

Challenge

The demands on our client’s information architecture had grown organically over the years and the IT infrastructure had become capacity constrained. For example, some key hardware and software technologies had already become end of life.

This represented a number of risks to the business, including limited ability to:

  • Meet new regulatory requirements due to the poor performance of the data warehouse and operational databases
  • Support increasing business volumes
  • Support the future business strategy due to deficiencies in the current information architecture

Approach

Deloitte reviewed the current information architecture (database, hardware, processes & operating model) and proposed a remediation program that would enable the client to transition to a new architecture that would address the business and technical risks.

The roadmap proposed allowed the client to address critical short term issues while progressing towards the long term vision.

The architecture proposed consisted of a new hardware infrastructure, upgraded database infrastructure and various other ancillary changes.

Solution

The programme has been a huge success for the client. It not only addressed technical and business risks but also led to a transformation in the relationship between IT and the business.

Specific benefits included:

  • Significant reduction in business risk
  • Met regulatory requirement deadlines
  • Addressed shortcomings in the current information architecture that were hampering IT’s ability to support the business strategy
  • Successfully delivered an upgrade of their existing data warehouse and operational database from 9i to 10g and 11g
  • Added capacity to cope with the future business volumes
  • Very significantly improved the performance of the end of day process
