The Open Structures Art Society and the Vasarely Museum |
Once upon a time there was the Hungarian avantgarde in the 70s which - according to a quote by Károly Kincses - "used to mean something else than a nice little style exercise: a reprimand, a top secret watch, being labelled as anti-regime and the treatment this entailed". There are such admirably active and lively members of this movement, now considered as "part of art history" - some of whom are Kossuth award winners, university professors and international stars - who will go that extra mile to provide exposure and venues to both young and old Hungarian and foreign artists of the constructive/concrete art that is defined by them as a joint starting point.
The place, the accomodating institution is the undeservedly unknown Vasarely Museum that provides a magical background to the bus stop at Szentlélek tér, which leaves behind the crowded city to suddenly dazzle its visitors with the precious values of tranquility and beauty.
Established in 2006, the Open Structures Art Society holds three exhibitions in the Museum every year. The heart of the Society was a community of friends which feels responsible for the interpretability of artistic culture, for raising an appreciative audience and for integrating contemporary fine art into culture as a whole. The founders are: artists Tibor Gáyor, István Haraszty, Katalin Hetey, Tamás Konok, Dóra Maurer, Vera Molnár, István Nádler, along with Zoltán Prosek.
A joint initiative of the operator of the Vasarely Museum, the Museum of Fine Art and the Open Structures Art Society is to transform the Vasarely Museum into a new forum for Hungarian and international art, and into a community that successfully conveys the values of contemporary art to a wider public.
