Deloitte Impact Day

Tettek Napja 2007

Budapest, 1 June 2007 - This year, Deloitte Hungary has organized Impact Day for the third time already. On this special day our practitioners do not sit at their desks doing their ordinary work but instead they work in the public interest outside the office. This year, we did not only help in the immediate surroundings of our office but did a major reconstrucion work in the Camp of Courage, a recreational site for children with cancer, located outside of Budapest.

In the first two weeks of June 2007, on six continents, Deloitte professionals from more than 20 countries worked for the improvement of their environment. Across the globe, Deloitte staff set aside their ordinary work for one day and express their commitment to society through volunteer work on Impact Day.
Each year, since Impact Day was first organised by Deloitte Hungary, we start discussions with the partnering institutions months before the big day about the nature of help they need most. Based on last year`s feedback from participants, this year we were searching for work-intensive tasks .So this year we decided to "dig in", to let Impact Day really make an impact!

On this year's Impact Day, we worked at four locations:
1.  Camp of Courage in Hatvan
Deloitte Hungary has been supporting the Camp of Courage Foundation for years. The main task of this year's Impact Day was to tidy up the Foundation's camp in Hatvan, a small town located one hour outside of Budapest. Camp of Courage organises recreational events using adventure therapy during the summer and all through the year for children suffering from tumours and other serious diseases, and also for their families. Participants of the Camp can - under constant medical supervision - engage in archery, pottery, music or sports to their hearts' content or take part in workshops on acting and photography, and in the meantime, parents will have the option to consult a psychologist. The first groups arrived at the camp on 23 June to occupy the new, modern buildings.

This year, the most exhausting tasks awaited the Deloitte team at the camp in Hatvan. We were able to participate in landscaping tasks, in order to prepare the area for the children's adventure therapy. To be precise, our job included painting, whitewashing, preparation of a campfire site, renovation of lairs, weeding, laying grass, landscaping, gardening, trimming hedges, sorting old furniture and mounting shelves. And once we had tackled these obstacles, we were rewarded with a goulash-party to finish off the day's work!
Of course, we also wanted to offer tasks to colleagues who couldn`t leave the city because of urgent client work, nevertheless they wanted to take part in Impact Day They were offered the following programs;

2.  In the office of the Camp of Courage, this charitable organisation, the Deloitte team was involved in administrative support (data capturing, printing, filing, registration) as well as in preparing necklaces, bracelets for the kids.

3.  The Institute of the Blind was already our Impact Day partner last year. They welcomed us again this year to tidy up the yard of the kindergartners. The Deloitte team cleaned and renovated the playground: they chiselled, painted and also did some gardening.

4. At Vörösmarty Primary School, this year once again the Deloitte team held some fun lessons, including, among others, the "Chocolate Exchange", always a favourite with the kids. In addition to this lesson of presenting the world of stocks playfully, the kids participated in quizzes, games, crafts and an environmental competition.

Dr. Gabriella Kádár, Deloitte's Marketing and Business Development Director commented, in relation to Impact Day: "Impact Day, organised in June each year, provides us with the opportunity to physically contribute to bettering our environment, in addition to the financial aid that is less palpable to our staff. In addition to the joy to be had from hand-labour, this day is also a true team experience for our professionals who do not look upon Impact Day as a tedious burden but rather as an anticipated (even expected) community event. This year, for the first time, we looked beyond the borders of our immediate environment, the 6th district, as a large group of our staff worked in Camp of Courage near Hatvan. Our co-operation with Camp of Courage started years ago; we do not only provide financial support to them but we also audit their accounts free-of-charge as an additional charity. We felt that - in addition to the above - the best way to express our respect and commitment was to offer our actual, physical labour."
