Water: Business challenges in water management |
Water pollution and water shortages are termed as "very serious" problems in recent times. In a world where only one percent of water is both fresh and accessible and water consumption has been growing at more than twice the rate of population increase, the fact that industry accounts for fully one-fifth of the world’s water use has increasingly become a lightning rod for criticism. Business has begun to respond to the challenge of managing water use. Some multinational high-tech companies have reported their water usage to the Carbon Disclosure Project’s nascent Water Disclosure Project while dozens more have become signatories of the United Nations Global Compact’s CEO Water Mandate.
This paper, Into the blue again: Business challenges in water management, seeks to address the basics of water use by business—to illuminate the concerns a company should have when first examining the issue of water use. This paper also aims to provide some insight on what steps a company can take to tackle the water issue.
