Abstract
Energy companies are facing unprecedented opportunities – and challenges. And like any complex, fast-moving enterprise, they need timely, hassle-free access to operational data that will enable them to make smart decisions and achieve business results.
The challenge
To reach these goals, one of America’s largest utilities – whose 15,500 employees deliver power to nearly 14 million people in 180 cities – turned to Deloitte to implement a new solution for reporting and analysis. The solution is enabling the utility to capture enterprise data and get it to the right people at the right time – securely, reliably, and in a format that lets them make decisions based on solid data and analysis.
How we helped
The engagement began with the implementation of software from SAP that gave the utility a new level of control over key business processes. Deloitte first deployed solutions for finance, human capital management, and supply chain management. Next, we added enterprise asset management for several nuclear facilities. We then went live with additional finance capabilities, plus asset management for energy transmission and distribution.
Once the utility had automated its enterprise operations, it relied on Deloitte to help deploy SAP NetWeaver Business Warehouse to capture core data and make it available to business analysts. On top of that we added SAP BusinessObjects business intelligence solutions to deliver complex business data in a way that’s easy for senior management to understand and act on.
Throughout the project we helped the client identify its business requirements and configure the solutions to meet its unique needs. We also offered guidance with program management to help the project proceed smoothly and realize its objectives. And when technical challenges emerged with the software, we established a ‘Red Team’ to assign owners, closely track issues, and quickly achieve resolution. In total, more than 20 Deloitte professionals applied their knowledge to the project to make it a success.
Solution
Today, the solutions are empowering senior management with easy-to-use dashboards tailored to their needs. Users get a graphical view of enterprise data, with pie charts, bar charts, and alerts that help them anticipate trends and respond proactively to changing conditions. As many as eight business units are now taking advantage of the solutions – quickly capturing, analyzing, and understanding complex business data and making faster, smarter decisions to achieve their business objectives.
