Who would have thought that a job at Deloitte would mean I could follow in the footsteps of my maternal grandfather who was an inventor? Thanks to my consulting work in advanced analytics, I have two issued patents and two more pending. I guess that means I have a passion for analytics. I love thinking through truly difficult business problems and looking for ways to apply data, logic, metrics, fact-based thinking, and end-to-end analytics services to solve those problems.
I arrived at a career in analytics through a rather circuitous path that began as a bio-molecular researcher and continued with work as a mega-systems geek interspersed with night jobs as a data modeller, statistical programmer, and a “smart home” systems developer. My love for the combination of business, project management, computing, and statistics led me to CTO and business systems development roles within the higher education, insurance, and financial services industries.
A former colleague recruited me to Deloitte in 2000 to help develop and lead the Advanced Analytics & Modelling (AAM) practice. As a consultant, I enjoyed the variety and challenge of the role – the world was my marketplace and every day was different. I was determined to leverage my previous experience in leading large projects and functional practices to develop the full end-to-end delivery of analytic business solutions for Deloitte.
Currently, I wear a number of hats: Global AAM Market Offering Leader for Human Capital, Eminence Stream Leader for the Deloitte Analytics Institute, member of the Global Actuarial & Insurance Solutions Executive Committee, and sales partner in the AAM practice selling full end-to-end business solutions to our clients.
When I arrived at Deloitte, my insurance experience meant that the insurance market was a great starting point for me. My first few years were focused exclusively on building predictive modelling and business implementation and technology integration solutions for insurers. I greatly increased my industry knowledge by working with these clients. What I learned about the business challenges of the insurance industry I have now applied to analytics clients in numerous other industries.
I will never forget the first time I participated in winning a big client pursuit, where I served as project manager. It was a huge project and remains the second largest project the AAM practice has ever delivered. Working on that project was in turn, gruelling, stressful, full of suspense, and very exciting. The great feeling of accomplishment gained through a true team effort was energizing and I will never forget it. The client relationships and friendships that I developed on that first project persist today.
Deloitte stands out in the marketplace as a truly end-to-end provider of analytics, across industries, solutions, and services. We provide clients with the full range of necessary services to make a business solution come alive: strategy; analytics; technology integration; business implementation; organization and change management; and feedback and performance management.
Many of our clients have indicated that the analysis we conduct for them makes a clear difference in their financial and operational results. It is very exciting to be a leader in an industry that can really improve business results in tangible and demonstrable ways.
When I joined Deloitte, I never thought I’d become part of a group that is so well-known and respected in the business world. I am very proud of what we have accomplished.
