The As One methodology

The As One methodology debunks the myth that there are only two major styles of leadership: the traditional command-and-control model and the newer collaborative model. In reality, there are multiple styles of leadership, some or all of which may lead to more effective collaboration, or As One behavior, depending on the situation.

The application of forensic analysis techniques to 60 cases led to the discovery of patterns of collective—As One—behavior, a term referring to the collective actions of a group of people, united in purpose, working together. Through these patterns, three success factors emerged:

  1. Shared identity (Who)
  2. Directional intensity (What)
  3. Common interpretation (How)

As One also defines eight distinct archetypes—different ways people understand an organization and how to work together—categorized in leader-and-follower pairs:

  • Landlord & Tenants
  • Community Organizer & Volunteers
  • Conductor & Orchestra
  • Producer & Creative Team
  • General & Soldiers
  • Architect & Builders
  • Captain & Sports Team
  • Senator & Citizens

Which archetype are you? Use our Archetype Identifier to find out which model suits your particular situation and work style.
