Deloitte sponsors European integration study at College of EuropeAcademic and professional collaboration kicks off with the "EU2020: The role for European business" conference |
New York, 18 March 2010—As part of a three-year joint initiative with the College of Europe, based in Belgium, Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu (DTT) and Deloitte Belgium will become the first sponsors of the European Economic Integration and Business Program at the College. The College of Europe is known for being among the most genuinely "European" of institutes for pan-European studies.
Students enrolled in the program will examine the impact of European Union (EU) policies on business through a combination of case studies, faculty tutorials, and access to executives and government leaders. Internships at Deloitte member firms will also be offered to the students, giving them the opportunity to gain real world experience outside of the classroom.
In addition to the European Integration course study and internships, Deloitte and the College of Europe will exchange subject matter expertise, co-develop studies, surveys, and publications, and host events like today's first annual conference "EU2020: The Role of European Business" in Bruges.
"Now, more than ever, the public and private sectors need to work together to come up with solutions that move us past this historic economic downturn," said Greg Pellegrino, DTT Global Public Sector Industry Leader. "Governments in the European Union and around the world have the essential task of implementing policies and regulation that will initiate sustainable growth and create long-term job opportunities. Academic and professional collaborations like this are at the cornerstone of sharing ideas and information, and help students to succeed in a more integrated and complex world."
European Comission cost reduction
Today's forum, entitled "EU2020: The Role of European Business," will bring together DTT and Deloitte Belgium executives, College of Europe students and faculty, as well as government and business leaders, to discuss the European Commission's Lisbon Strategy for Growth and Jobs, specifically touching on European business operations, EU internal market logistics, and the need for cost-effective and renewable energy sources.
As part of today's conference, DTT and Deloitte Belgium will also chair the "Lowering Red Tape for Business" workshop, which will focus on the European Union's recent red-tape reduction initiative and the implementation challenges thus far. It will also shed light on upcoming initiatives and potential policy areas with participants discussing corporate cost-reduction measures implemented by the Commission and EU member states.
"Red-tape irritations are blocking growth and innovation—with companies facing increasing costs in a more competitive global environment," said Richard Doherty, Lead Client Service Partner for the European Institutions, Deloitte Belgium. "Administrative costs and the subsequent economic burden can be eased in some industries by public and private sector collaboration. Regulators—at a national and European level— need to include businesses in the initial policy planning process to decrease unnecessary costs and improve competitiveness, growth, and job creation.”
