Convergence: Now is the time for transatlantic leadership

In his 1 February 2008, keynote address in Washington, D.C., Jim Quigley invokes the 60th anniversary of the Marshall Plan as he calls on the business and political leaders of the transatlantic community to lead the way toward the adoption of a single set of high-quality, global, financial reporting and accounting standards. 

 

The Marshall Plan, he says, was a “transformational achievement” that “inaugurated an extraordinary economic partnership between Europe and the United States – and a remarkable period of transatlantic leadership in world affairs. Over the ensuing six decades, the transatlantic community has been a leading force in the world for economic growth, technological innovation, and the rule of law.” Quigley concludes on a note of urgency:  “We are poised to make history … but we must act quickly. The window of opportunity is closing.”
