Mining Safety: A business imperative

DOWNLOAD

m

Mining safety is a business imperative regardless of the state of the economy. Safety is a key business imperative for mines as pressure mounts to provide a Zero Harm environment for workers. In order to assist mines to operate successfully and safely in future, Deloitte has undertaken in-depth research which looks at holistic solutions for safety concerns.

Our research is not focused on empirical analysis, where a reductionist view produces charts and metrics to define the issues. It is a narrative-based approach that seeks to analyse the holistic interaction of the complex mining environment. We interviewed 19 people representing unions, mining organisations and safety experts to understand why our traditional approach to safety initiatives will not deliver future improvement. Finally we discuss where future solutions may be found.

Deloitte’s approach to mining safety is a holistic one, with emphasis placed on both behavioural and technical aspects.
By employing both of these competencies, Deloitte aims to introduce Zero Harm to mining in South Africa, and placing this country as the best practice leader in mining safety.
