Focus: A lasting legacy

How major events bring positive, lasting change for host communities

Hosting major sporting and entertainment events, such as the Olympic and Paralympic Games, FIFA World Cup, and World’s Fair, serves as a catalyst to improve national economic competitiveness. It is also becoming increasingly attractive to emerging markets as a way to build global recognition and influence.

Additional benefits include the opportunity to accelerate infrastructure development, improve public image, and foster collaboration between the public sector, private sector, and community. These benefits can have a truly transformational effect on a community, but they can also be challenging to initiate and deliver without an effective plan that considers all of the stages of the event lifecycle from prebid to postevent. With the whole world watching and fierce competition from emerging cities and countries, hosting an event can be a high-stakes game, but one that can pay off in the long term if done right.
