Michael Raynor

Distinguished Fellow, Deloitte Research

Michael Raynor

Michael's client work, research, writing, and speaking focus on two general themes in the fields of corporate and competitive strategy: innovation and uncertainty. He has published widely on these topics in a large number of outlets, including award-winning articles in the Harvard Business Review, the Journal of Applied Corporate Finance, Long Range Planning, and Engineering Economist.

In the field of innovation, Michael is best known for co-authoring, with Clayton M. Christensen, "The Innovator's Solution: Creating and Sustaining Successful Growth." Released in September 2003, and with over 100,000 copies in print, this book is already a worldwide bestseller.

Coping and exploiting uncertainty is the subject of a series of research reports that explore the implications of Strategic Flexibility—a proprietary framework that Michael has developed, which combines scenario-based planning with the emerging field of real options. These reports cover the telecommunications, financial services, health care, energy, manufacturing and media sectors. As a result of this work and numerous other publications, Michael is an internationally recognized expert in the application of real options thinking to strategic issues.

Michael shares his findings through active publishing, frequent presentations at industry conferences and company seminars, and extensive client work in collaboration with client service teams across a wide range of industries around the world.

Michael holds an undergraduate degree in Philosophy from Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, a Masters of Business Administration from the University of Western Ontario in London, Canada, and a Doctorate of Business Administration from the Harvard Business School in Boston, Massachusetts.
