Recapping Rio+20Highlights and takeaways for business leaders |
In June, several senior leaders and practitioners from Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu Limited and its member firms attended Rio+20 (formally called the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development), the UN Global Compact's Corporate Sustainability Forum, Business Action for Sustainable Development 2012's Business Day, and various side meetings for business and civil society. Rio+20 and the surrounding events provided a forum for numerous discussions and decisions relating to the sustainable development agenda. This paper offers impressions from three of Deloitte's delegates of how the events of Rio+20 might accelerate, slow, or re-direct pre-existing trends in the sustainability agenda. The paper also seeks to interpret the potential implications of these developments for business and to equip executives with key takeaways for sustainability strategy and management following the Rio conferences.
