Background
The Telecommunications industry is the backbone of the global economy, with total revenues in excess of $1.8 trillion (USD), and a key enabler of modern commerce across all industry sectors. However, energy consumption has grown in line with demand and this now represents a major environmental challenge. Public awareness of the impact Telcos are having on the environment is increasing and both governments and companies are responding. Due in part to the global economic downturn, 2009/10 is likely to mark a turning point for the sustainability agenda. Environmental policies have become mainstream, primarily as an opportunity to reduce cost. Yet while cost reduction lies at the heart of the green agenda, this is only part of the opportunity offered to Telcos by environmental policies.
Key findings
Deloitte’s new report analyses the key drivers that are making environmental policies critical to Telcos: social awareness, legislation, cost and revenue and looks at the opportunities for the telecommunications industry in this area.
