Bridging the digital divide |
What do 300,000 children, 30,000 computers and 3 Deloitte professionals have in common? They are all a key component of Deloitte's collaboration with two nongovernmental organizations that are making a difference around the world—one reconditioned computer at a time.
Deloitte's most recent involvement with bridging the digital divide is highlighted in the Responsible Business series, which aired on CNBC around the world over the weekend of 12-13 July. In Thailand, Deloitte is bridging the digital divide by providing computers already loaded with learning software to a school located in the remote village of Isaan. Access to computers and software play a critical role in helping students reach their academic potential. The project in Thailand was led by Rony Wuytjens (Deloitte Belgium), Nick van Dam, founder of e-Learning for Kids (DTT), and Olivier Vanden Eynde, founder of Close the Gap (Deloitte Belgium).
The project in Thailand is just one example of the many ways Deloitte member firms make a difference in communities around the world. "It's just the right thing to do," notes John Connolly, DTT's Corporate Responsibility Chairman and Chairman of the Board. "It's the right thing for all businesses to play their part in the overall corporate responsibility agenda."
