World Economic Forum on Latin America 2009Implications of the global economic crisis for Latin America |

Rio de Janeiro, 14-16 April 2009
Economic reform in Latin America during the 1990’s has led to heightened economic growth in recent years primarily driven by strong commodity prices and stable financial markets. Despite this success, however, the global financial crisis and a strong reliance on the United States and China has led to declining currency values, weakened stock markets, and a decrease in world trade and direct foreign investment. Under the theme, “Implications of the Global Economic Crisis for Latin America,” the World Economic Forum on Latin America focused on responding to the economic slowdown by capitalizing on the region’s rich natural resources, young and talented human capital, and vast land mass to create sustainable growth.
The event took place 14-16 April in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and it brought together more than 500 industry and government leaders from Latin America, including Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. A delegation of senior Deloitte partners and leaders also participated in the summit and the delegation included:
- Juarez Lopes de Araujo, Chief Executive Officer, Deloitte Brazil
- Carlos Haehnel, Chief Executive Officer, Deloitte LATCO; Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Deloitte Argentina
- Edgar Jabbour, Clients Partner, Deloitte Brazil
- Frank Paredes, Chief Executive Officer, Caribbean and Bermuda Cluster, Deloitte United States
- Javier Romero Rio, Clients & Markets Partner, Deloitte Mexico
- Alberto Terol, Chief Executive Officer, EMEA, Deloitte United Kingdom
- Marcelo Drügg Barreto Vianna, Partner, Deloitte Brazil
Serving as an official Summit Partner to the event, Deloitte contributed its perspectives during several sessions and events. Specifically, Alberto Terol moderated a panel discussion on the official program focused on preventing trade barriers and protectionism in Latin American countries. Marcelo Drügg Barreto Vianna also moderated a session on sustainability as a growth engine and how to engage consumers in a private Consumer Business industry partnership meeting.
Deloitte’s involvement with the World Economic Forum on Latin America underscored its strategic commitment to a region that has experienced tremendous growth in recent years and continues to remain well positioned for the future.
