Teach For AllScaling an innovative model around the world |
Deloitte21 and Teach For All share a commitment to driving innovation in education and skills to help underserved young people achieve success. Teach For All is a global network of seventeen independent social enterprises that enlist their respective nations’ most promising future leaders in addressing educational needs in their countries. Teach For All aims to expand educational opportunity internationally by helping to increase and accelerate the impact of its national affiliates by sharing knowledge and resources. This model complements the Deloitte21 initiative, which focuses on advocacy for underserved students, developing leaders who are creating and delivering successful interventions, and investing in innovative, scalable approaches.
Advocacy—Advocacy for education and skills for the 21st-century economy is a central component of Deloitte21’s approach. Teach For All’s affiliates recruit top graduates to commit two years to teach in high-need areas and to work throughout their lives to address educational inequity. Deloitte member firms are actively engaged in this dialogue. Deloitte United Kingdom worked with Teach First’s advocacy arm, Policy First, to publish Lessons from the Front 2009, an opportunity for Teach First alumni to share insights, perspectives, and ideas on urban challenging schools to help shape future policy. In the U.S., David Williams, CEO of Deloitte United States Financial Advisory Service and member of Teach For America’s New York City advisory board, recently led a round table on education attended by various New York City education leaders.
Leadership—Teach For All and Deloitte21 both also champion leadership. With significant training and ongoing support, the Teach For All teaching participants become leaders in the classroom who work relentlessly to improve educational outcomes and life opportunities for students. Through their first hand experiences, teaching participants gain conviction that it is possible to ensure educational opportunity for all. Teach For All programs build powerful and ever-growing leadership forces of alumni who work from inside and outside of the educational system to effect fundamental changes. Deloitte United Kingdom worked with Teach First to help shape their strategy to support the development of 100 Teach First teachers into headship by 2018, and Deloitte Middle East has been engaged since the founding of Teach For Lebanon and has a partner acting as Vice Chairman of the Board.
Innovation—Teach For All’s innovative model for scaling globally, combined with Deloitte21’s focus on applying Deloitte professionals’ skills to help take such organizations to scale, results in a high impact collaboration. Since its founding in 2007, the Teach For All network has expanded from two to seventeen individual enterprises in countries across the globe. Deloitte member firms in Chile, the Middle East, the UK and the U.S. each provide multifaceted support to their local Teach For All affiliates. This support varies based on the affiliate’s maturity and has included providing critical audit support to recently founded affiliates Enseña Chile and Teach For Lebanon, and engaging in advocacy and pro bono projects with Teach First and Teach For America.
