Deloitte Costa Rica: Fundación Acción Joven

Keeping at-risk adolescents in school through community alliances

Deloitte Costa Rica has created an alliance with Fundación Acción Joven to empower and engage students at risk of dropping out of high school. The program empowers students and increases their societal and community involvement.

Students’ roles are shifted from being passive recipients of their in-school experience to becoming agents of change. Through dialogue with their teachers and mentors, they define solutions that will improve their educational experience. Students participate in workshops and classroom discussions that promote social cohesion, encourage them to think independently, develop respect for others’ opinions, and increase their understanding of diverse cultures and backgrounds.

The program’s unique approach has proven successful. In the past five years, Fundación Acción Joven has worked with nearly 5,000 students. In 2010, 1,347 students from eight public schools participated in the program and results show significantly lower dropout rates. Fundación Acción Joven students are more often completing school, gaining the skills and confidence to pursue their goals, and taking ownership of their future.

Deloitte Costa Rica professionals are mentors, role models, and career coaches to the students. Working with Fundación Acción Joven and the local teachers, volunteers from Deloitte Costa Rica expose students to the various aspects of the business world and career opportunities, helping them understand how to achieve successful employment and attain the education and skills required to pursue their personal career goals.
