Deloitte Southern Africa: TEACH South AfricaProviding talented teachers to underserved schools |
Deloitte Southern Africa works closely with TEACH South Africa to attract and train dynamic university graduates to become teachers and educational “ambassadors.” As South Africa is experiencing a shortfall of trained teachers, TEACH South Africa and Deloitte Southern Africa are working to create a larger pool of talented teachers to better prepare high school students for employment.
TEACH South Africa recruits ambassadors to focus on critical subject areas such as mathematics, science, English, and technology. The ambassadors participate in an intensive course on teaching techniques before being placed in underprivileged schools. Positive results have been achieved and TEACH South Africa interventions are credited with increasing pass rates, despite the limited resources in the schools where ambassadors are placed. From 2009 to 2010, TEACH South Africa ambassadors contributed to an overall 7 percent increase in passing grades within regions where they were placed.
Deloitte Southern Africa has been instrumental in taking the TEACH South Africa initiative from conceptualization to implementation. Through board roles, project management, and consulting skills, Deloitte professionals have worked closely with TEACH South Africa to implement its business operations, develop its recruitment processes by leveraging the member firm’s own graduate hiring and recruitment expertise, and create a teaching curriculum for the ambassadors.
Deloitte Southern Africa partners have taken on key leadership roles. A Deloitte partner serves on the board, providing strategic support and project direction. The leader of Deloitte Southern Africa’s Graduate Academy program also serves in an advisory role in the recruitment and selection process of ambassadors.
By working closely with TEACH South Africa to support education in the region, Deloitte Southern Africa is taking significant steps toward creating a skilled pool of talent that, in turn, will be the foundation for a sustainable economic future.
