Shipping: a booming industry
With high yields, high asset prices and lots of cash, there has never been a better time for the industry. The rising demand for shipping created a demand for the stocks of shipping companies. Shortly after Posidonia 2004, shipping’s IPO (initial public offering) renaissance began, with 2005 being dubbed the 'Year of the Shipping IPO'. Only a few years ago, listed shipping companies were few and far between. Greek companies have figured prominently in the almost US$2 billion of shipping IPOs over the past two years. Though Greek shipping families have dipped their toes in the public listings marketplace over the years, it was not until 2004 that strength across multiple sectors created opportunities for both investors and companies.
