During 2011, some £17bn was paid into FTSE 100 defined benefit pension schemes. Over the same period the reported deficit increased by c. £150bn to c. £250bn at 31 December 2011. These figures highlight the impact pension schemes can have for sponsors and the importance of scheme funding negotiations.
Since the introduction of the specific funding regime, scheme sponsors have had to play a much more active role in the valuation process - striking a balance between conflicting demands for cash; ensuring that they satisfy scheme demands, service debt and provide appropriate levels of return to shareholders whilst retaining sufficient cash within the business for investment.
In order to help scheme sponsors, we have developed a corporate guide to pension scheme valuations. The guide is designed to give the essential background to the process so as to help companies determine their optimal strategy for scheme valuations. It also presents some interesting examples aimed at highlighting the range of approaches and solutions available.
In this seminar we will cover the major topics raised in the guide. These include:
Corporate valuation strategy;
Presenting sponsor covenant;
Setting technical provisions; and
Avoiding overfunding risk.
