President Obama’s review of the US export control system

New US export control reforms imminent

US Export Control Reforms 2010

Background

In April 2010, eight months after President Obama’s call for a review of the US export control system, US Secretary of Defense Robert Gates announced the four key areas of reform to the US export control system.

He stated that the US Government will implement:

  • A single commodity control list
  • A single licensing policy
  • A single enforcement-coordination agency; and
  • A single IT system

These four key reforms address many of the concerns raised by US industry and the International community regarding commerce and competitiveness.

While the proposed changes may be beneficial if implemented in the short term, the question remains if this will fit into a model of a one licensing agency and a possible new set of regulations.
