Findings from The Deloitte CIO Survey 2013

Talent shortages are seen by CIOs as a key issue hampering their ability to support new business demands. People who can really understand the business, who can think strategically and who can communicate effectively are those in most demand. To address these gaps, IT leaders are turning to increasingly creative tactics to attract and retain a workforce with the right blend of technology expertise and business skills to propel the IT function forward.

Key findings

  • 52% of CIOs are struggling to find professionals who can think like the business, while just under half have talent gaps for those who can communicate effectively.
  • In terms of technical skills, 42% of CIOs are demanding more talent with business analysis skills, while a third have a shortage of staff capable of delivering technology strategy and architecture, and analytics and big data.
  • 58% of IT leaders are currently experiencing problems recruiting the right IT staff
  • Over 40% of respondents are redesigning IT roles and structures and/or providing access to cutting edge IT projects to attract and retain talent.
