CIO Career

Findings from The Deloitte CIO Survey 2013

From the actions they are taking,  it is clear that CIOs want to make a more strategic impact on their organisations. From a career perspective our survey suggests that roles that provide them with the opportunity to do this are exactly what they are looking for. This should give pause for thought to Boards and business executives - are they getting the best out of their IT leaders in terms of the contribution they can make inside and outside of the business? Equally, CIOs should consider the role they can play in proactively making this happen to give them the best opportunity for a fulfilling career.

Key findings

  • One third of respondents do not believe their role as an IT leader provides them with adequate training and/or development opportunities for a varied and fulfilling career
  • The top motivator to move into a new role is the prospect of delivering greater contribution to business strategy
  • 53% of respondents expect to remain in an IT leadership role for their next career move
  • Many CIOs are also considering new roles within the executive management team – most notably a CEO or COO role
