Findings from The Deloitte CIO Survey 2013

Our survey results reveal that IT leaders recognise the need to be an effective business partner and that opportunities exist for IT to add more value to the business in which it operates. However, it is clear that CIOs still have some key hurdles to overcome to help change perceptions of IT as a mere support function and improve their reputation as a credible partner to the business.

Key findings

  • Almost 70% of CIOs believe they can make the biggest difference within their organisation by enabling business strategy
  • 61% of respondents acknowledge  they still have some way to go to improve their business partnering capabilities
  • Almost 90% of CIOs see their team’s greatest asset as delivering routine IT services
  • Providing high quality data and insight, and optimising new business processes are seen as key areas for improvement to deliver further business value
  • The top barrier to effective IT business partnering is considered to be a lack of business understanding and a poor perception of the role of the IT function
  • Establishing a business partnering function seems to give CIOs the best chance of achieving excellence as  a strategic partner to the business.
