Social media: New ways of working |
The benefits of embracing social media are not just applicable to the Marketing and IT departments. Social media provides organisations with the opportunity to review and update structures and ways of working, and implement more innovative, interconnected practices.
Large organisations and departments are typically structured into independent functional or product-focused teams, often with little co-ordination between silos. When applied to an organisation’s internal processes, social media can be used to break down departmental barriers, changing the way your people interact, and fostering collaboration both internally and externally.
There is an obvious tension when this open approach is compared to many organisations’ more traditional approach to risk management. However, when properly managed, the natural characteristics of social media can be used to achieve better governance through transparency, cross-functional collaboration and independent peer review.
Social media projects need not be grand, nor must they be implemented across the whole organisation immediately. Many of the most successful examples are those which had clear, business-aligned objectives, and were developed and implemented comparatively quickly within one team; with a core group of loyal users going on to champion broader adoption.
Deloitte is one of a growing number of organisations who have already realised significant benefits from leveraging social media. Through applying both customised and existing commercial supplier platforms, we have been able to harness the ideas and expertise of our people throughout our firm, generating innovative solutions for ourselves, for our clients and partner organisations.
