Optimising the supply chainWinner of best supply chain project information management awards 2003 |

When Universal Pictures International (UPI) had trouble delivering DVD titles over the Christmas period, it didn’t want a report about what was going wrong. It needed immediate improvements. Deloitte worked with UPI across the supply chain – within UPI and externally with manufacturers, reprographic and art houses, its US-based studios, 13 local operating companies, 30+ licensees, etc. – to identify root causes and fix the problems.
In just six months UPI improved its rate of on-time DVD deliveries by a factor of 8. Just in time too, as the number of titles managed by UPI jumped from 80 in 2002 to 300 in 2003. DVD production is a highly complex process, involving internal departments and external groups including manufacturers, reprographic and art houses, the US-based studios, local operating companies and licensees. In Q4 2002, during the most critical time for retailers, UPI was struggling to get its DVDs onto shelves and available to customers across its 50+ territories. The business problems were:
- On-time deliveries running at a low of 10%
- Lack of understanding as to why
- High risk of lost revenue
- Significant backlog of discs for replication
- Number of titles being marketed and sold by UPI set to increase from 80 titles
