Improving lives for children in CornwallFinalist in Innovation category |

Deloitte was a finalist in the innovation category at the 2008 Management Consultancies Association Management Awards for its work with Cornwall County Council that radically changes the way the council provided services to children.
Cornwall County Council had received a poor performance rating for its Children’s Services Directorate that indicated its services were inadequate in relation to keeping vulnerable children safe. The assessment required it to take drastic action. Cornwall County Council decided to take the opportunity to radically change the way it provided all services to children.
Deloitte was commissioned to deploy a transformation programme that at its heart had the goal of improving outcomes for Cornish children by putting children at the heart of the Directorate’s business.
Wide breadth of expertise
Deloitte was able to draw on a wide breadth of expertise from across the firm such as programme management, leadership development and coaching, HR transformation, data and privacy compliance, process improvement and efficiency realisation to drive quality and transform Cornwall’s Children’s Services Directorate.
The results were tangible: within 12 months Cornwall had improved its central government assessment in this area from inadequate to adequate and its capacity to improve rose from adequate to good.
Dean Ashton, Director of Children’s Services at Cornwall County Council said: “I can not think of a better example of the public and commercial sector bringing their different skill sets together in order to deliver sustainable improvement across a whole system. The ability of the Deloitte team to immerse themselves in our agenda was a major contribution to the success of this project.”
