How Haringey became first council to achieve AAA rating
Weaving a killer web
These were the key challenges facing the London Borough of Haringey. As IT was key to meeting these challenges – as well as Government targets – Haringey Council partnered with Deloitte to develop a clear IT strategy, with the website a priority. The guiding principle was inclusivity:
“a website for all people”, accessible regardless of language, IT know-how or physical ability.
In just 12 weeks, Haringey Council’s website was transformed. A customised content management system made it easy for over 100 employees to contribute information. As a result, the council’s website leapt from outside the top 250 in the Public Sector Forum’s league table to the top London Authority website – and fifteenth nationally. Haringey was also the first council website to achieve an ‘AAA’ rating for accessibility.
Haringey Council had no foundation for e-services. Its website was a poorly used tool that offered:
- No e-services.
- Out-of-date, inconsistent and inaccurate content.
- Ineffective search functionality.
- Errors and broken links.
The council was determined to improve, as well as to meet the e-government target of 100% electronic service delivery by December 2005. It wanted to establish an effective web presence that created a flexible platform for future development.
